Maine Coons usually love to be around children, will
follow them around and are very tolerant and gentle with them.
Maine Coons love company, whether it is human, other cats
or dogs. We have placed many into homes with dogs , and they have become best
buddies, as you can see with this Cavoodle, Albert and a neuter boy, Jakobi, who
in the picture is only 11 mths old.

In proportion to their size, once grown they do not eat a
great amount. If you have a kitten, between about 3 mths and 10 mths they
often eat quite a large amount. This is a real growth phase and they need
all they can eat to support rapid growth and development.
A pet Maine Coon who is desexed does not take alot of
grooming. Usually once a week, paying special attention to the underarms
and britches is all that is needed. Of course there is the occassional
exception to this.
This is usually one of the first questions we get asked.
Like all animals, including us humans, size varies and there is no guarantees,
with exceptions at both ends of the scale. Generally a neutered male
should be about 8 - 10kg when mature, and a female is a little smaller averaging
7 - 9kg. It is not uncommon for males to exceed this weight though.
At PawsPlus Maine Coons all our Maine Coon cats and
kittens are indoor only. With a selection of toys and plenty of attention,
they are very content to stay indoors. The couple of times we have had an
escapee, they are usually waiting at the door to come in in a very short time.
The Maine Coon is often said to be more like a dog.
They are so company orientated, whether people, other cats, or dogs, and are
usually only a few steps behind you. They like to see and 'help' with
whatever you maybe doing.

Why do I have to wait 14 weeks
for my kitten? Maine Coons
are a slow maturing breed of cat. As I have no major health issues and do
not breed my females very often (if I get a say in it!), I do
not wean the kittens from mum, but let her wean them when she feels the time is
right. This extra time allows the kittens to learn how to play, become
independent and confident kittens in their own right. At 10 - 11 weeks of
age most kittens are still looking for mum or its litter mates to cuddle upto
and feel secure. To wait an extra couple of weeks at this young age is far
better than getting a kitten that may have behavourial issues later in life,
which form a big percentage of vet consultations today.

I have thought about
breeding??? There is much
to consider when thinking of starting to breed. The link herein is a good
starting point for reading and learning what needs to be considered.

What genetic traits may a
Maine Coon carry? Maine
Coons can be prone to
hip dysplasia
due to their size. They are also known to be prone to
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, but this is not restricted to the Maine
Coon, but is a general feline vulnerability even seen in our domestic cats. |

Is a Maine Coon alright if always kept
indoors?
I would much prefer my kittens to go to ONLY
indoor homes. The Maine Coon is a natural breed of cat, very active and curious.
I have to be honest, of my kittens that I know have been let to wander outdoors,
their life span is very short.............a sad fact! There is just so much
traffic, stray cats willing to fight who may carry disease, snakes, and I am
sure we can all think of many other dangers out there, including dogs who will
not tolerate a cat. The Maine Coon will try and befriend any
animal........so think if he comes across one of these dogs. Okay, this is a bit
of a sore point with me, in Dec 07 I had several kittens go to homes that could
not understand how a cat could be content being inside..............so they let
them out, (as I have since found out) now out of 5 of these I know 3 have
now ended their very short journey i life...............all well under 12 mths
old. My cats do not go outside..............I have a couple who think they
want it...............otherwise most are very happy, content, and healthy and
ALIVE inside 24 hrs a day. The couple of times I have had a break out
through a fly wire or open door, they have been waiting nervously to be able to
get back into their safe zone. PLEASE, just supply them with a few toys,
PLENTY of love and attention and I am sure you will have a very content, healthy
Maine Coon who has a chance of living a long and happy life! |
